Where in hell is Nigeria going? Corruption is now a normal phenomenon in this country, eating into the bones and flesh of this great country which had a great potential and bright future. But looking critically at the direction in which we are headed, all hope is lost.
What prompted this write-up was the irritation that popped up in my bowels when I saw an FRSC (Federal Road Safety Commission) officer receiving a 'book' containing money as a bribe from a driver. I felt like doing something silly at that spot but I couldn't, I was just dumbfounded. The most annoying of it all was the book used to give him and the sort of respect I had for these FRSC guys, I thought they were decent people until today.
Apparently, the main cause of a scene like that is the level of poverty in the nation. There are so many people in the nation that live everyday below $1, that is the level of poverty. I understand that most of them are low hierarchy salary earners, however this doesn't give that officer the right to receive that bribe. I'm sure he is not the only guilty one, there are more of them out there. If the officer had been on the right path, karma would have done its 'wonders' and they wouldn't have lost the respect I had for them.
Recently, my dad told me that the best president this country has ever had was Idiagbon, Buhari was his vice president. They took the country like their own families, discipline was the order of the day and everything was fine. He said one dollar was valued at eighty kobo at that time, and the country was moving forward. The worst president was Babangida (Abacha was better). Babangida came in and destroyed every good thing that had been done by the former administration. He turned the nation on its head, this ushered in the worst era of governance in the history of the country. Government officials took advantage of their positions to get away with billions of looted state funds, while the mass was sinking in poverty. The increase in price of crude oil didn't help, it only aided the rate at which state funds were looted. The nation was rooted in debt which got bigger by the day.
All these have led to frustration among the people of the nation, they've given up on the country. Many are dying to leave the shores of the country for for better countries. Corruption has eaten even into the hearts of young men and women. You hear them say "when I get there I would do the same". Students associations are now treading on the path of the older ones.
Where are we going? I really don't know. God is our only hope.
